Postcolonial Europe? Mbembe & the end of Western dominancy

Let op! Dit programma vindt plaats in Theater Bellevue. What is Europe’s position today in a globalised world where people, products, and knowledge cross
borders continuously and citizens all over the world are more connected than ever before? According to Achille Mbembe, one of the most famous postcolonial thinkers worldwide, it is time for a radical change of our worldview. Mbembe has written extensively on African politics and postcolonial theory. In his book Critique of Black Reason (2017) he challenges us to rethink the present with the view of a future that, he points out, will differ from the past and the present. At the Forum, Mbembe looks into the history of Africa and how it has been used as the antithesis of Western modernity. Europe should construct itself without depending on the ‘rest’. What
does Europe look like in the postcolonial world order? What does a just future look like? Achille Mbembe shares his vision during this programme and searches for answers. The young and
talented writer, theatre maker, and storyteller Ogutu Muraya will open the programme with a theatrical introduction.

Achille Mbembe (Cameroon, 1957) is a leading philosopher and political theorist who has written extensively on African politics and postcolonial theory. He has been affiliated to renowned universities such as Berkeley, Columbia and Yale University.  Ogutu Muraya (Kenia, 1986) is a theatre maker, writer and storyteller. This programme is a part of the second edition of the Forum on European Culture: “Act for Democracy!”. At a time when the future of Europe is more uncertain than ever before, we bring together leading and inspiring artists, thinkers, economists and politicians during a 4-day interdisciplinary programme to discuss Europe and its future.
