Not in my Backyard (voorheen Mind the Gap) is de maandelijkse internationale actualiteitenrubriek van De Balie. Deze maand de zomereditie over toerisme en de gevolgen ervan.

And Justice for ALL #4: Het recht volgens de sharia

[ UPDATE: Leden van een extreem-rechtse groep hebben kortstondig deze avond verstoord. Enkele mannen die zich in het publiek gemengd hadden, ontvouwden een spandoek met daarop de tekst: "stop islamisering van nederland www.voorpost.org" en enkele symbolen. Door de aanvoerder werd met luide stem dreigende uitingen gedaan. Herhalingen van dit programma nu via De Balie livestreams, in ieder geval t/m woensdagmiddag 9 juni. Enkele screenshots hier. Shariarechtbanken in Nederland zijn voor veel Nederlanders een schrikbeeld. Inmiddels duiken ze al op in Groot-Brittannië en Canada. Is het denkbaar dat in Nederland de sharia wordt ingevoerd? En zijn shariarechtbanken echt zo onwenselijk of verdienen ze een plek naast ons bestaande rechtsstelsel?

Op 8 juni realiseert De Balie een echte shariarechtbank. U kunt hier zelf zaken aanhangig maken. De zaak wordt dan beslecht door bevoegde shariarechters.

Daarnaast krijgen we tijdens deze processen inzicht in de totstandkoming en werking van sharia. Wie maakt de wetten van de sharia eigenlijk? En is het denkbaar dat het Nederlands rechtssysteem veelzijdiger wordt ingericht, volgens een pluriform model?

Riverrun: A collective and experimental online artwork

do 18 mrt / 18.00 uur Riverrun could be described as an emergent Exquisite Corpse. Creators collaborate in the making of a collective story in real time. Each person participates, using their own computer (client), by writing a small part of a collective story which is housed in a central computer (server). Each participant is asked to log on to the project from their own computer for a short period of time (the duration of the experiment). These creative experiments can be performed in different languages. The process and outcomes are made available online to the general public.

Hyper-mobility and the urban condition

Hyper-mobility poses a myriad of challenges for urban planners: How is urban planning responding to conditions of hyper-mobility? Are networking technologies playing a role in policies and actions? Can technology offer solutions in the urban zones most affected by the mobility catastrophe?

This program will compare industry-lead initiatives with alternative views, artistic and civic initiatives and down to earth research on actual effects of various policy measures on urban mobility.

Skrunda Signal

za 20 mrt Skrunda Signal is an artistic research project delving into the mythical past of a Soviet early-warning Radio Location Station (RLS) operating from 1967 to 1998 near Skrunda, Latvia. Internationally known as ‘henhouse’ radars, these powerful transmitters – emitting impulse type signals, similar to those detected in the West as ‘woodpecker’ – were allegedly responsible in the nineteen-seventies for shutting down radio transmissions on at least two occasions for up to seven minutes. A metaphysical investigation into spectral ecology, cold war politics and electromagnetic myths.

To Brand or not to Brand: The ElectroSmog city & nation branding debate

Branding strategies are the object of extensive critical research, mostly from the area of urban sociology. This research tries to figure out how such large scale urban and regional product-packaging strategies are affecting local economic structures, land and real-estate, local tax provisions, social housing, traffic flows, and other conditions that have an immediate impact on the daily life of residents.

In this debate, designers, artists, activists, architects and sociologists will look at the relation between branding and sustainability. City branding - or nation branding - attempts to hook up a location to the international flow of tourists, goods, workers and capital. It makes a lot of sense from a short term economic point of view. From the point of view of sustainability, however, these branding strategies are highly questionable. They add to the problematic of hypermobility that is under discussion in the Electrosmog festival.

The bandwidth in closed societies like for example Iran and Syria are low because of political reasons. Even though at the same time it slows down business opportunities. Thereby the system of filtering and blocking on line content is sophisticated. Both countries have a young population (50 - 70% younger than 30 years) and lots of them want to connect with and have access to information. No surprise that circumvention tools are widely used. How can this politically induced slowness of networks be addressed in a discussion of global connectivity? In collaboration with Monique Doppert, Hivos, The Hague & Tactical Technology Collective (London).

Prof. Yirmiyahu Yovel is Emeritus Professor Filosofie aan de Hebrew University of Jerusalem, aan de Universiteit van Tel Aviv en aan het Jerusalem Spinoza Institute. Ook is hij winnaar van de prestigieuze Israël Prijs.

Hij werd bekend door zijn veelbesproken tweeluik over Spinoza, Spinoza and Other Heretics. Daarin betoogde hij dat Spinoza’s revolutionaire filosofie voortkwam uit zijn achtergrond als telg van een familie die uit het katholieke Portugal was gevlucht. Op het Iberisch schiereiland waren zij gedwongen geweest zich uiterlijk als Christenen te gedragen, maar velen hielden er heimelijk aan het jodendom vast.

De term ‘dispassion’ is afkomstig van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf David Goldblatt. Hij stelde: My dispassion was an attitude in which I tried to avoid easy judgements. This resulted in a photography that appeared to be disengaged and apolitical but was in fact the opposite.’ Op zondagnamiddag wordt deze attitude van Goldblatt – Coetzee neemt een vergelijkbare positie in- vanuit verschillende invalshoeken bekeken. Hans Aarsman, David van Reybrouck, Sara de Bosschere en Lotte van den Berg spreken over de morele betrokkenheid van de kunst. Rob van Gerwen plaatst het gesprek in een groter filosofisch kader. Lucette ter Borg leidt het gesprek.
