Migrants all over the world send massive amounts of money back home. In total, this is an amount many times bigger than what Western countries spend on development aid. This money plays a role in the economic and social development of the home countries. Yet migration does not appear in the Millennium Development Goals that were established by the United Nations. At the same time, development organizations are giving more and more attention to the function and potential of these cash flows.

Are migrants the missing link in accomplishing the millennium development
goals? Or are they being used by Western governments to solve the problems in their home countries?

Het eerste decennium van de 21e eeuw zit erop, tijd om de balans op te maken. Wat zijn de belangrijkste romans, zowel Nederlands als internationaal, die de afgelopen tien jaar zijn verschenen? De Groene Amsterdammer polste via een grootscheepse enquête de mening van de literaire smaakmakers van Nederland. In grote getale stroomden de antwoorden binnen van schrijvers, critici en uitgevers. De toplijst tekende zich al gauw af, maar heel wat juweeltjes verdwenen helaas ook naar lagere regionen. Op deze literatuur à gogo-avond aandacht voor de beste, de mooiste en de belangrijkste romans en de onterecht nu-al-bijna-vergeten schrijvers. Pleitbezorgers en tegenstanders gaan met elkaar in debat en taaie vetes worden uitgevochten. Voor eens en voor altijd zal worden vastgesteld wie écht de belangrijkste Nederlandse schrijver van dit moment is.

Of nog erger: het verdwijnt ongebruikt in de onderste bureaulade.

SLAA | Scheppingsverhaal: Jan Siebelink

Jan Siebelink werd bij een groot publiek bekend door zijn roman Knielen op een bed violen (2005). Siebelink debuteerde echter al in1975 met de verhalenbundel Nachtschade. In zijn romans en verhalen gaat het om gewone mensen. Door hen op een speciale manier te belichten komen ze los van de werkelijkheid en worden het raadselachtige personages. Literatuur hoort volgens Siebelink mensen bijzonder te maken. In het oerverhaal ‘Witte chrysanten’(uit Nachtschade) zitten alle motieven die hij in zijn latere romans zal uitwerken. In 2008 verscheen zijn roman Suezkade, met als hoofdpersoon Marc Cordesius, leraar Frans aan het gymnasium. Vanaf de eerste dag wordt Marc getroffen door Najoua, in wie hij een zielsverwant herkent. Vanwege zijn innemende verschijning krijgt Marc direct het vertrouwen van de rector en na verloop van tijd verwerft hij een eigen lokaal, een haast paradijselijke enclave – maar voor hoe lang?

Hotel van Hassel

Van vrijdag 16 tot en met zondag 18 april 2010 opent De Balie haar deuren als Hotel van Hassel. Schrijfster Sanneke van Hassel nodigt publiek en auteurs uit voor een lang weekend gewijd aan het korte verhaal. Een voorhoede van Europese schrijvers geeft haar visie op het medium.

Onder andere Judith Hermann (Duitsland), Anatoli Gavrilov (Rusland) en Petina Gappah (Zwitserland/ Zimbabwe) brengen samen met Nederlandse auteurs als Ton Rozeman en D. Hooijer een prachtig overzicht van de stand van het Europese korte verhaal.

KennisCafé # 23: Het einde van de dood

Hoewel volgens de heersende opvatting sterven bij het leven hoort, is er bijna niets te gek om ouder en vooral gezonder te worden: van de beroemde Steen der Wijzen, tot cryonics, vitamines en anti-oxidanten in pilvorm, veel sporten en heel erg weinig eten.
