During this programme, we honour Egyptian poet Ahmed Fouad Negm (1929-2013) posthumously, winner of the 2013 Principal Prince Claus Award. Ahmed Fouad Negm was a master poet, a fearless social and political critic, and beloved advocate of the poor and the disenfranchised. Rooted in local working class culture, he has been a perceptive public intellectual and a balladeer of the people for many decades.
Famous Dutch artists such as visual artist Marlene Dumas, actor Sabri Saad El Hamus, and singer Karima el Fillali will all give a performance inspired by Negm’s social and political poetry. Prince Claus Laureates South African photo-activist Zanele Muholi and Pakistani artist Naiza Khan will discuss the possibilities of making apolitical art within a highly politicized context. What is the social responsibility of the artist? And what is the relationship between the autonomy of the artist and the political message he or she wants to convey?
Culture in Action: The Prince Claus Awards Week
During the week of 9 December 2013, the Prince Claus Fund and De Balie organise ‘Culture in Action: The Prince Claus Awards Week’. For the first time ever, on the occasion of the 2013 Prince Claus Awards, 10 laureates will be present in Amsterdam. Culture in Action presents a unique opportunity to meet these ground-breaking artists and thinkers from all over the world. The laureates are honoured for their outstanding achievements in the field of culture and development and the positive effect of their work on the development of their countries.

Tijdens dit programma wordt de Egyptische dichter Ahmed Fouad Negm (1929 – 3 december 2013), winnaar van de Grote Prins Claus Prijs 2013, postuum geëerd door middel van performances en debat. Meer dan een halve eeuw gebruikte Negm zijn originele en kritische poëzie als wapen tegen corruptie en onderdrukking.
Nederlandse artiesten als beeldend kunstenaar Marlene Dumas, acteur Sabri Saad el Hamus en spoken word artist Karima el Fillali vertolken ieder een eigen tekst van Negm. Daarnaast staat tijdens een debat over cultureel activisme het gedachtegoed van Negm centraal. De Zuid-Afrikaanse fotoactivist Zanele Muholi en de Pakistaanse kunstenares Naiza Khan gaan met elkaar in debat over de vraag of het mogelijk is om a-politieke kunst te maken in een gepolitiseerde context. Welke politieke en maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid heb je als kunstenaar? En in hoeverre staat een politieke boodschap de autonomie van de kunstenaar in de weg?

Van 9 t/m 13 december organiseert het Prins Claus Fonds in samenwerking met De Balie ‘Culture in Action: Prince Claus Awards Week’. Ter gelegenheid van de Prins Claus Awards 2013 zijn voor het eerst tien laureaten in Amsterdam. Culture in Action biedt een unieke kans deze baanbrekende kunstenaars en denkers uit de hele wereld te ontmoeten. De laureaten worden met de Prins Claus Prijs geëerd omdat zij door hun artistieke en innovatieve culturele uitingen positieve verandering bewerkstelligen in hun omgeving.
