Economies of the Commons

Strategies for Sustainable Access and Creative Reuse of Images and Sounds Online

International Working Conference
Amsterdam & Hilversum 10, 11 & 12 April 2008
This dossier documents and brings together background materials for the international conference Economies of the Commons. This public working conference and its side programs address the remarkable cultural, educational and societal significance of the new types of audiovisual commons resources that are currently being created on the internet. Sustainable public access and enhanced opportunities for creative reuse of these resources are the particular focus of this conference and this web dossier.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
tekst uitklappen [ + ]

Through the efforts of a wide variety of initiatives, ranging from national audiovisual archives, cultural institutions, professional cultural producers, and civic initiatives, right down to p2p file sharing networks, a quasi universal media archive is created on-line.

Nobody, however, properly understands as yet how the long-term sustainability and public access to these invaluable resources can be guaranteed. This might even require counter-intuitive approaches such as the creation of viable business models for public access, and a new understanding of value creation in and around these commons resources – hence ‘economies of the commons’.

The conference program is structured around 5 key-themes:
- National Audiovisual Archives
- Commons-based Peer Production
- Professional Cultural Producers
- Intangible Cultural Heritage Archives
- European Digital Library

A one day seminar at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum, on Intellectual Property Rights issues in the digital audiovisual domain, precedes the conference on Thursday April 10, the results of which will feed into the conference program.

The program will comprise different formats, such as public keynote lectures, interdisciplinary workshops for the exchange of ideas, experiences and the formulation of strategies, as well as targeted workshops addressing very specific problems relevant to specialists, cultural and media producers, policy makers, and decision makers in public and private organisations.
