For several years Belgrade was regarded as the epicentre of war and aggression. But today one and a half million people are living there who themselves have their own opinions on their history, identity and future. On the eve of the elections and the decisions on the status of Kosovo, De Balie - instead of holding on to prejudices- heads for direct contact with Belgrade. Is the Netherlands doing so much better? We, too, have cracks in our self-image. In both countries, ‘national identity’ is a hotly discussed topic, as is the question of how to relate to one’s country’s past. ‘A Rough Guide to Belgrade’ will not just be a journey in search of the essence of the Serbian capital, but an opportunity for self-examination as well.
