Concepts for Social RFID, hosted by
Mediamatic, works on concrete proposals for relevant social RFID projects.
Mapping Future Histories of RFID, by the
Digital Methods Initiative,
will capture RFID debates on the Web, making useful histories of the
present. The workshops will kick off with an introduction by designer
Timo Arnall.
Each of the workshops has room for 15 to 20 people. No specific technical knowledge is required, but participants should bring, if possible, a laptop with wi-fi and a VGA connection.
For the
Concepts for Social RFID workshop, a digital camera with an easy way to upload pictures is also required, as well as some basic experience with so-called Web 2.0 practices.
The total number of participants to these workshops is limited to facilitate close interaction.

Concepts for Social RFID
Which objects in public or private space can become richer social objects by adding the specific possibilities of RFID?In this workshop we will work on concrete proposals for relevant social RFID projects. We'll start by creating some common ground in the notions of the Social Web and of RFID that we'll be working with. We'll briefly zoom in and out on various social RFID projects, and look at different ways RFID systems can be organized in terms of scale and accessability. We will also look at a few current social web practices, discuss geotagging behaviors, and take note of several non-RFID tools for digital unique identification in physical space. We'll read and discuss
Jyri Engestrøms comments on what make up good social objects online. We'll do groupwise field research in more and less public spaces around De Balie.
In a series of these central sessions, brainstorm sessions and field research trips we'll develop proposals for projects that bring the Social Web into physical space (or make physical space part of the Social Web).
Workshop facilitator is Klaas Kuitenbrouwer (Mediamatic), who led various workshops on social and cultural applications of RFID, and also put together the
RFID & Physical Computing Hackers Camp at PICNIC'07.
Mapping Future Histories of RFID
How are online debates surrounding RFID formatting the technology before it fully appears?
The
Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) takes tools to the Web to capture this
process, surveying 'past futures' as they are written. Join us in
mapping the RFID debate and its imagery, in order to rewrite the present.

Richard Rogers, director of Govcom.org and initiator of the Digital Methods Initiative.
